Consider Getting a Great Dane

Although the Great Dane is a very large dog, in fact one of the largest, it is also usually very gentle, hence the nickname the gentle giant. This makes it a relatively good option for a family dog. However, they should still be watched around children, mainly due to their large size and the potential for accidents to occur rather than potential aggressiveness. They don't usually have problems with other pets or children.

Great Danes typically stand between 30 and 34 inches high, though they can be even larger. Their height and length should be about the same, making them relatively square in shape. Their weight is usually between 100 and 200 pounds. They have a smooth coat with short hair and are considered average shedders. Although they can come in other colors, the colors accepted for show dogs include Harlequin, brindle, fawn, blue, black, and mantle. Some of the other colors, including white, tend to come with a higher likelihood of genetic diseases, including blindness and deafness.

Caring for a Great Dane is relatively easy. They should be taken for training as soon as they are old enough since they get large very quickly and you want to be able to control them well and get them well socialized. They also need to have a decent amount of exercise, which can be accomplished with daily walks. While they are still growing it is best not to have them run since they are more likely to have problems due to their fast growth if this happens. Daily grooming can help make full baths less necessary, and this tends to include brushing and sometimes using a dry shampoo. Nails should also be trimmed. They do best living in homes with a large yard.

As with most dog breeds, there are some diseases and health issues that Great Danes tend to be more likely to suffer from. These include gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), hip displasia, congenital heart disease, tumors, and tail injuries. In general they tend to live about eight to ten years, though some have been known to live longer with the proper care.
